“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” – 1 Timothy 2:1-2 ESV
It’s a New Year. Many of us have resolved to either take a new action, or to improve on actions we already take.
Perhaps prayer is one of those resolutions you made for this year. We encourage you to consider prayer as a priority, just as the Apostle Paul stated in the passage above. We can’t think of a better way to prepare ourselves for the challenges that lay ahead in 2020.
Reminder of God’s Promises
The photo accompanying this piece was taken while Tamara, her mother, her grandmother, and I were traveling to a presentation in Amarillo. We spotted the double rainbow over the church, and we were reminded again of God’s promises to us, and to just how integral prayer was (and continues to be) in our grassroots movement.
In our work with the Convention of States, we emphasized prayer. Every meeting, every conference call, every committee hearing began with prayer. When we faced critical decisions, we always paused for prayer, often times stating we would pray about it over the night.
God knows that prayer adjusts our expectations and our hearts; it calms our emotions, clarifies our thinking, and, most importantly, focuses our attention on Him, not us, not the issue or personalities involved.
Daily Prayer Plan – State Legislators
Praying for our state legislators was a central piece of our statewide strategy, beginning in 2016. It has remained in place ever since. In Texas, with 31 State Senators, and 150 State Representatives (not coincidentally the number of chapters in the books of Proverbs and Psalms, respectively), we determined to pray for every state legislator, by name, every month. We divided the Senators up one day at time, and the state representatives 5 each day. And we created a calendar to remind us, who we were praying for each day.
Here at Grassroots Gold we’re introducing the same concept. Our Home Page now includes a “Today’s Prayer Requests – State Legislators” section, with a brief reminder of each legislators district and last name. Clicking that link will bring you to pictures of each legislator, and separate links to bring up information about each legislator, to better inform your prayers.
We encourage you to make praying for our state legislators, and all of your elected officials, a regular practice of your prayer life.
Christians Engaged
Finally, we encourage you to consider a new faith based liberty organization just launched last month in Texas, “Christians Engaged.” You can find their home page here.
Founded by Bunni Pounds and Trayce Bradford, among others, this new organization will provide you weekly and daily encouragement to pray. Please go to their site, sign up, and pray!
By the way, Christians Engaged is hosting a statewide conference call this Saturday, January 11, at 2;00 PM Central Time. You will need to RSVP to receive the call-in information.
God bless you all.
For Liberty, Tamara Colbert and Paul Hodson
You know I’m in!
Hope you get a bunch of folks to sign up.
