The Facts about Redistricting:

  • Redistricting is the process by which new congressional and state legislative district boundaries are drawn. All United States Representatives and state legislators are elected from political divisions called districts. District lines are redrawn every 10 years following completion of the United States census. The federal government stipulates that districts must have nearly equal populations and must not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity. (Source: Ballotpedia)

  • 2020 is census/redistricting year.
  • In June of 2019, the Supreme Court ruled, in a 5-4 decision, that state legislators can continue to draw these electoral districts unless state law or Congress prevents them from doing so. (18-422 Rucho v. Common Cause)
  • Most agree that this ruling means redistricting remains a partisan/political process.
  • Our Texas state legislators will continue to draw our electoral districts, and they will do this during the 2021 Texas Legislative Session.
    • The party in power in each chamber of the Texas State Legislature will draw those districts.
    • Elections matter! The 2020 Texas Primary will be held on March 3, 2020. The 2020 General Election will be held on November 3, 2020.
    • Who we elect as our State Legislators will have at least as much, if not more, impact than who we elect as our US Representative, our US Senator, or even our President.
