Third Special Session Redistricting Progress

The Texas State Legislature is responsible, every 10 years (after the census) to redraw representative districts for the following jurisdictions:

  • United States Congressional Districts (Texas added 2 new seats this census, now a total of 38)
  • Texas State Senate Districts - 31 seats
  • Texas State House Districts - 150 seats
  • Texas State Board of Education - 15 seats

The Texas Legislative Council (TLC) provides lawmakers and citizens with tools to view and create redistricting maps. You can find their great overview of the redistricting process here:

Texas Senate:

Texas State Senator Joan Huffman's Senate Bill 4 was reported favorably out of committee on September 28. You can see the proposed map here:

Texas House:

Texas State Representative Todd Hunter's House Bill 1 will receive a public hearing on Monday, October 4th (today)! You can see the proposed map here:

Many thanks to Daniel Friend at "The Texan" for the following information regarding the proposed Texas House map:

"Using data obtained from the Texas Legislative Council, the Texas Partisan Index (TPI) examines the median share of the vote between Republicans and Democrats in the 2018 and 2020 elections."

Detailed data (spreadsheet) can be found here:

Our friend Tom Glass provided a deep dive analysis of the proposed House map here:

Remembering the Battle of Gonzales

On October 2, 1835 the spark that ignited the flame of the Texas Revolution was lit in Gonzales.

This short (10 minute) historical drama “Forging Texas - Episode 1: Season of Revolution,” produced by our friends at Texas Public Policy Foundation, confronts us today with the same important question:

At what cost is Liberty?

Like it or not, we are all going to find out what cost we are, or aren’t, willing to pay.

Please take 10 minutes to watch. Share everywhere.

Grassroots Gold: Last Week at the Capitol
Thursday, September 30th: Advocacy Letter Delivered

Grassroots Gold Co-Founders Tamara Colbert and Paul Hodson swung by the Capitol on Thursday, September 30th, and delivered this advocacy letter to the offices of Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Speaker of the House Dade Phelan.

The letter encourages Governor Abbott 'to add “Legislation identical to HB 166 filed during the 87th, First Called Special Session” to your Agenda items for the Third Called Special Session.'

HB166, authored by State Representative Matt Krause, addresses the Republican Party of Texas Legislative Priority regarding gender modification, and had the support of 75 House sponsors during the First Called Special Session.

View the Letter Here

The letter was signed by nearly 70 elected and grassroots leaders, representing 18 unique organizations and themselves throughout the state of Texas.

Tamara and Paul described their unique adventure delivering the letters during their Grassroots Gold Facebook Live last Thursday, including literally dropping the letter over the balcony of the Senate Chamber to Senator Bryan Hughes!

Per previous feedback from legislators, these signed letters raise awareness of issues as they represent collaborative efforts by grassroots advocates.

Let us pray that this effort will bear fruit.

"The National School Boards Association (NSBA) has urged President Biden to have opponents of Critical Race Theory (CRT) investigated and prosecuted under federal anti-terrorism laws—even though the group did not identify any significant instance of organized terrorism associated with CRT opponents who have spoken out at school board meetings across the nation."

SCHOOL BOARD GROUP LABELS CRT CRITICS AS TERRORISTS

USA Today's Version of the Same Story

Buried on page 168 of the House Democrats’ 2,465-page mega bill is a tenfold increase in fines for employers that “willfully,” “repeatedly,” or even seriously violate a section of labor law that deals with hazards, death, or serious physical harm to their employees.

The increased fines on employers could run as high as $70,000 for serious infractions, and $700,000 for willful or repeated violations—almost three-quarters of a million dollars for each fine. If enacted into law, vax enforcement could bankrupt non-compliant companies even more quickly than the $14,000 OSHA fine anticipated under Biden’s announced mandate."

“I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or if they try, they will shortly be out of office.” - Milton Friedman
